Cool Images: The Potential World of ‘The Hunger Games’

with 9 comments

The Hunger Games is a popular young adult science fiction novel, written by Suzanne Collins, currently being adapted to film. It takes place in a dystopian world featuring pristine futuristic cities, destroyed futuristic cities,  poverty stricken districts and perilous battle zones. While no official images from the film have been released, there is a bountiful source of science fiction matte paintings and digital art that many talented artists have produced on the web over the years. This post contains a compilation of images that fit the descriptions of each cool zone in the novel.

The richness of imagination and creative detail in these pictures should get fans excited about what the upcoming film could look like. Click the link below or scroll down to check them out!

Panem surfaced after the apocalyptic demise of modern civilization and it is situated in the area once known as North America. Within Panem there are 12 distinctly divided districts that do not intermingle. The Capitol city reigns supreme, flourishing with wealth, while the lesser districts dwell in squalor. Past civil conflicts have disrupted this system of inequality, but since then the rulers have found interesting ways of exerting power over their underlings. With the success of these brutal policies, Panem is surely headed towards long lasting peace and stability…

The Poor Districts

For citizens in the poorest of Panem’s districts, life consists of immense suffering. Grit and grime trickle from the cracks of the makeshift buildings. Food is scarce and comfort is nonexistent. A fog of  misery coats the musty roads and fills the alleyways. Each day is an excruciating toil from which there are very little gains. The rulers of the districts come from the mighty Capitol. They impose a measure of discipline so harsh and so severe that no fool would dare to challenge them. Not this time…

The Capitol

The Capitol is the shining city of power in Panem. Resources are plentiful – easily snatched up from the weaker districts.  It is pristine, incredibly advanced and it exudes wealth and technological elegance. To live in the Capitol is to bask in vanity and luxury. Its citizens are preoccupied with pleasure; tucked away safely behind the protection of the city’s vast walls. They can almost forget about the pathetic urchins who dwell outside in filth…

The Arena

The Arena is a simulated battle zone where young participants are forced to fight to the death. It is controlled by the “Gamemakers” who have the power to alter the environment and manipulate the weather. In the featured edition of the Hunger Games the Gamemakers create a lush forest. It comes complete with rabbits, squirrels, deceitful spy-birds and genetically enhanced killer wasps. They also throw in deadly fire traps just to keep the players on their toes…

The Dark Days

The “Dark Days” were a time of fierce rebellion in the history of Panem. Severe poverty and inequality caused civil unrest that quickly boiled over into rage. Fiery battles spread throughout the world leaving the ashes of destruction behind. Though some districts eventually recovered, there are many painful reminders that constantly reopen the wounds. But what despair must fill the hearts of those still languishing in the ruins…
